  • the "mantra songs" were written between september 2005 and september 2006. they were recorded by lowell sostomi, mat vuksinich, and myself between april 2006 and may 2007 in various locations (a basement in toronto, a bedroom in fort erie, a sun-room in arcata). they are somewhat unfinished but i am releasing them finally because i am done with them. all of the songs were written during a period of time in which i felt extremely ILLITERATE and unable to finish ideas. lowell played banjo, harmonica, and drums; eric padget played trumpet; mat and shelby sifers sang; i played guitar, piano, glockenspiel, and sang. "remember: only you" was written by kristina born as a poem and i made it into a song; her version had no repetition at the end. i want to thank everyone who has helped with shows or given me a place to sleep or made me a meal or gave me a hug or came into contact with me in any positive way last year when i was singing these songs - you have no idea how much it meant to me. i am now filled with words again and am working hard on new songs, i am very excited about them. please feel free to write me: oh_map@hotmail.com or [out-dated address]. i look forward to sharing words with you. cheers - jordaan mason, may 2007.

those were the original liner notes. this album is pretty bare-bones but these songs are still important to me, i don't have the energy or resources to make more copies so it's free now.

  • Covers from favourite artists that have been recorded over the years.

Some are good... I suppose; some are not so good...

Half an hour of nostalgia, if nothing else...

  • This is some really early work. Most of it is really bad, but the last few tracks are me going from wacky avant garde to electronica and IDM(???) type stuff.

  • Produced by Andrew Small

  • The liner notes are included at the end.

  • Queer as Folk-Pop is a delicious buffet of singalongable queerfagdykebutchfemme&tranny-centric lovejams for the pansy pop-addict in all of us. Because don't tell me you're not sick of the same old compulsive heteroboticism harshing your tunebox. This project aims to communicate to audiences of DIY folk/pop/whatever music that we're here, we're queer, and we dig handclaps.

QAFP is an ongoing project, so please send submissions to queerasfolkpop@gmail.com. It's a great way to get some headphone-play for your hot mess of a music project, and contribute to queer visibility in the nebulous DIY music scene too. There are no guidelines regarding the form or content of submissions. It doesn't have to be a new or exclusive song; it can even be a cover. The options include everything under/over the rainbow, so use your imagination.

Let's pitch in to make something that sissies and spinsters alike can sing, snap, stomp and swoon along to for ages to come.

    Queer Lovejams for the Win,

  • I had lost all of these songs at one point, but then a fan/friend spoke with me over the internet and said he had a bunch of my old songs, so I got super stoked and he emailed me every single one he had, and I couldn't be happier.

(I don't know how you feel about it though)

Anyway, most of these songs were written by a younger, angrier, little, boy.

These songs are about, growing up in a world where you're not sure if you'll survive, staying a loser in the town you live in and your dreams never coming true, getting really really drunk and mean at parties because you secretly want to tell everyone exactly you're feeling, the shitty town you've grown up in, getting your heart broken, being drunk and passing out and listening to the radio from the other room and absolutely loving each song, and about a friend getting in a car accident and realizing how much you love him.

I really hope you like them.

this album is dedicated to kass, kile, matt, mike, & jon

    Less Than Three Records

    12/08/09 - NEW!
Physical copies of "Other People's Songs (Volume One)" can now be purchased from Less Than Three Records, in a limited edition of 14 handmade copies with original ink/coffee cover illustrations by Wade Steinman (!). They all look REALLY awesome.

    Full Album .Zip Download here.

from september 29th to october 7th, 2008, via the use of many unemployed hours, and the combination of an unclaimed magnus chord organ and an unclaimed bedroom, both in the house whose couch i sleep upon, i recorded a new cover song every day. they are here presented in chronological order to represent those 9 ridiculous days. the idea was to record one a day for thirty days, but on the 10th day, drained of all creativity, imagination, and interesting ideas, i drank a bottle of wine whilst stumbling through an uninspired rendition of At Night's "Catch The Moon" in the bathroom and realized the recording was a mess, and an obvious indication that i could no longer force myself into such prolific production. well, i could, but it would stop being good.

so i took a break, focused on writing, played a few shows, and a couple months later started working on "don't let me down". that one took me a lot more than a day--i couldn't figure out how the 5/4 part in the bridge came in/went out for weeks. i was making it a lot more complicated than it had to be, but it took the musical competency of my dad to help me see that. seriously, the guy's a pro.

i think it was (is) a good project, and i've learned a lot. it is beneficial to force yourself to work even when you're not feeling "inspired", but only to a point. when you pass that point, you make crap. also: i work well in one day increments.

i'm going to continue to do covers, and have already started working on volume two, but i also need to record/finish writing the next record of original sarcastic dharma society stuff, and i want to do some recording/production for some other people, and i want to get a live band together, so we'll see about all that.

    much love,
    -mat (January 4th, 2009)
