ADVENTURES compilation

This is a compilation named ADVENTURES. It was 'released' sometime during 2008 as a cassette tape with recycled roadmap artwork. Not many people got to hear it, so here are the songs again, for free. Each musician contributed something related to the theme of ADVENTURES:

1. 'Walking' by COLE MILLER
"I have a song about walking, and at the time it felt very much like an adventure."

2. 'Time Travel Is Hard Without A Home' by ASSAULT SQUAD SAFETY SCISSORS
"This song began as an instrumental-only song but the words popped up in my head quite quickly. The beginning dwells on my fascination with BACK TO THE FUTURE and moral time-travellers. Would you play the stock market? etc. HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE... The second half dwells on this strange feeling I've had since I moved 1,000 miles away from my original home. Your new location isn't your home, and you soon find that your own home just is not the same, so in a sense, you are homeless. I thought I would have it easy compared to a time traveller. I can't even imagine what that would be like. I suppose, make your own home? Easier said than done."

3. 'West' by WOLF TICKETS
"The photo [see: http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/1089/20070104153630.jpg] is taken in Cluj-Napoca, my home town. I was there for Christmas in 2006 when I wrote the song, but didn't think much of it; and then some time in January I was on a bus and saw this out the window and it all came together. Then I went back to Brussels and recorded it with some improvised keyboards at the end, which came out distorted because they were amplified through a tape player with batteries running out."

4. 'Airplane' by FRANCOIS
"Recorded in a plane during the journey London - Atlanta in January 2006. A friend gave me a portable keyboard the size of a Game Boy. The piano bit was recorded with the vocals in a backstage room in Florida, later during the tour [with Camera Obscura]."

5. 'Trees' by ROSE & THE PETALS
"Going on adventures and leaving behind things that make you miserable and train journeys that make you feel like Bruce Springsteen travelling across America and the feeling when I step off a bus or a train or a plane in Sheffield or London or Paris, have a cigarette and feel more at home here than wherever I've come from."

6. 'Song For Disappearing' by GHOSTS
"I originally had an old song in mind for this cassette which I abandoned. It was written when I lived alone in France for a few months. Weird, forgotten, lonely times. This is a different song, much more positive! Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night shall stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

7. 'Aliens' by JAM ON BREAD
"If I was in another galaxy, I'd miss the internet and Grimsby. I'd miss my family and my girlfriend and I'd never get to go on tour again."

8. 'A distant beach in landlocked Sheffield' by IAN BAXTER
"A couple of months ago half asleep on a late, late drive back from London we ghosted down a road where I used to live. When I lived there years ago I would lie in bed listening to cars driving down the road and now I was one of those late-night travellers. Was someone lying in bed listening to me? That road was special, something about the position of the houses back from the road turned the sound of the cars into something like waves: the sound of a distant beach in landlocked Sheffield. Over four years I loved in various shabby rented houses on that street and I made several recordings of the sound of cars passing. Probably around the same time I was falling in love with the idea that recording something frames it and turns it into music. However, the only one I could find is on a four-track cassette tape marked up 'hungover - 11:30 Sunday'. It's me idly plucking some minor chords whilst a microphone hung out of the window picks up the sound of cars passing on the road. I dug up this recording, all the way from 2002 and now six years later I've made it into a new piece. In a funny way I'm trying to parallel what I've written above; heavy delay distorts and obscures the original recording, as if it were half-remembered."
