Old Shows
2008
"Spiritually connected": that's the most important thing I can say about my relationship with Derrick Hart. We first spoke back in '99 when I was into all kinds of bad stuff in Miami, Florida. Our lives criss-crossed through wires, tapes, and emails for several years while I passed in and out of many different lives, hazes, and phases - as did he. Then right at a pivotal time, both of us found ourselves wearing similar shoes.
It is also at that time that Derrick and I became very good friends. Derrick's friendship has been a dear and meaningful one to me. It helped me through some hard times when often he was the only one I could count on. He has been like a long distance brother, a spiritual consultant and confidant. I know Derrick has seen things that I have seen. I know that he really knows God. I know that he believes in Heaven, because I know he has seen Hell. I may not call things the same thing Derrick calls them all the time, but I know we feel the same universal truth that transcends all religion and belief.
Lunar Flower is incredibly proud to offer this collection of songs from the brilliant Derrick Hart. This record is quite the change of pace for Lunar Flower, but I know all of you will enjoy it as much as I do. Derrick's music is passionate, sincere, beautiful, sad, happy, serene, slightly skewed, and timeless. Derrick's lyrics are often deeply personal, touching upon addiction, faith, abuse, death, love, nightmares and beauty. The vehicle that delivers these incredibly honest and passionate lyrics is Derrick's crystalline voice, which is mesmerizing, to say the least. His songwriting and performance is equal with the greats of the genre. If you listen to "Black Mountains" without crying or feeling something profound, you simply are not alive. If you wonder what happened to the great American songwriter of the days of old, look no further. I give you "Old Shows" by Derrick Hart.
