really old like

this collection of songs (part 1 of 2) are my oldest surviving recordings. they rely less on quality and more on a cute factor to be enjoyable. they have sentimental value to me, but to everyone else i recommend this collection be listened to as if you're paging through a picture book. (you may only spend a couple seconds looking before you flip the page.) i lost five of my earliest recordings and i miss them dearly. i'm treating this submission almost as if i'm making a backup for myself.

all of these songs were recorded on an internal mic in an old laptop i had using bargain bin multi-tracking software. the guitar was usually recorded in my bedroom, drums in my basement, and during this time i always recorded vocals at 2 in the morning while lying on my back (laptop on my chest so my face would be close to the mic) in a coat closet.

some notes about the songs...
01 a shade brighter... written while thinking about this girl ashley i liked but not really a love song.
02 remember (aka puppy fuck)... i was scared my mom would hear the lyrics.
03 hey girl... an attempt to convey my feelings towards this ashley woman i was obsessed with. for some reason i'm really pleased with how my guitar sounded on this track.
04 emo party... i forgot until just now that this one was about ashley also. lolz0r. in a fit of embarassment i chopped out the last 20 seconds of this song. >.<
05 no pictures... this one is definitely about ashley. ^_~
06 pink... the original recording of this song featured different chords, a guitar solo, a bass line, and electronic drums. too bad i lost it. this is actually a newer recording but it's an old song so i included it.
07 fuck myself... this is probably the song i was most proud of at the time of these recordings.
08 oh dear... i don't know.
09 hearts... when this was made i had recently talked to a guy in the admissions office of the art institute. this one of my first attempts at "sonic art."
10 double negative... i was listening to a lot of shellac. this song was supposed to be used as my demo to get into the art institute. i never followed up on that.
11 friends... same "sonic art" shit.
12 bambi demon... my drum teacher asked me to write a song in 6/8 time so this is what i came up with.
13 sometimes we die... nothing interesting to say about this one.
14 shoegaze... i was trying to be a shoegazer.
15 punk thing... i was trying to be a punk rocker.
16 boo ghost baby hot death... i was trying to be a noise rocker.
17 WarmMilk... my first song ever with vocals. i remember having no instincts or ability to write or sing a vocal melody, so i talked. makes me cringe.
18 window wash... drum lesson assignment.
19 hello tomorrow... another drum lesson assignment.
20 early recording... i'm pretty sure this is the first one i ever hit record on.
