A Boston Bruins jersey worn by Adam Sandler in "Happy Gilmore" sold in a Propstore auction Thursday for $40,950, four times its high estimate.
The jersey was screen-matched to the scene where Sandler, as Gilmore, played in his first golf tournament, The Waterbury Open. Accompanied by his coach Chubbs Peterson, played by Carl Weathers, Sandler's character gets a rough indoctrination to golf — not knowing what a caddy is and sporting his grandfather's used clubs.
After swinging and missing, Gilmore, who takes up golf in an effort to raise money to get his grandmother's repossessed house back, hits his first drive on the green. He then five putts and finishes the hole by punching out a taunting fan.
"Happy Gilmore" wasn't one of Sandler's best performing movies. It had a $12 million budget and did only $38 million at the box office.
In May, Netflix announced it had purchased the rights to Sandler's sequel "Happy Gilmore 2."
