Atlas Comics, the comic book publisher that predated Marvel, is being relaunched at New York Comic Con this week.
The revival was announced by Steven Paul’s SP Media Group, which will lead the brand.
Atlas was founded in 1951 by Martin Goodman, who would go on to found Marvel Comics, eventually retiring the name.
As part of the relaunch, which will include a new name “Atlas/Seaboard,” the company has entered into an exclusive partnership with Walmart to distribute classic merchandise of Atlas characters. The brand will also create a line of collectible action figures with Mego Toys and is in development with Paramount Pictures for a live-action film.
The most successful Atlas comics included issues of the Human Torch and Captain America, as well as Westerns and horror series such as Marvel Tales.
Paul, the chairman of SP Media Group/Atlas Comics, is an independent film producer with film credits including “Ghost Rider.”
The relaunched company will provide collectors a first taste of its new collectibles available via Walmart at a 1,200 square-foot booth at NYCC, including giveaways, reprint issues and limited-edition apparel.
The film currently under development with Paramount will feature the publisher’s classic character Devilina, with plans to utilize other IP, including Phoenix, Grim Ghost and Hands of the Dragon, according to the company.
“The dynamic characters and world-building behind Atlas/Seaboard dates back to the golden age of comics, crafted by some of the greatest creators of all time," publisher Jason Goodman said in a release. “We aim to honor their legacy, and my grandfather’s vision to build a powerhouse source of content and innovation.”
