Since Jimmy Carter’s death a week ago, collectors have flocked to eBay to buy mementos from the 39th president of the United States.
But the most unique, and one of the most expensive buys, came Sunday when a 50-pound bag of peanuts from Carter’s warehouse in Plains, Ga., which was signed by Carter, sold for $300.
The Carter family started planting peanuts in the 1800s in Georgia.
In 1979, the Carter peanut business was the focus of a federal probe, after it was alleged the Carters took nearly $7 million in loans for the business in 1976 from the National Bank of Georgia and used it to help Carter win the election later that year. No wrongdoing was ever discovered. The business was sold two years later.
At 100 years old, Carter had the longest life of anyone who has served as president.
