Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Mookie Betts has long been popular among card collectors.
But it appears his cards are more desirable than ever after Monday’s sale of his 2014 Bowman Chrome Autograph Prospects Red Refractor PSA 10 for a record $123,220.
Prior to the sale, the highest price paid publicly for a Betts card was $79,200 for the 2014 Bowman Chrome Autograph Prospects Superfractor 1/1 in May 2019.
Betts, now in his 11th season, is leading the league in OBP (.393), while batting .301 with 14 home runs in 92 games.
Other examples of the record-breaking Bowman Chrome Autograph Prospects Red Refractor have sold three times publicly in the past. In July 2022, a BGS 9.5/10 example sold for $70,800. Just a few months later, a PSA Authentic copy sold for $31,800.
Most recently, the same BGS 9.5/10 copy sold again for $61,200.
Of his most expensive card sales prior to the record-breaking auction Monday night, all 10 occurred prior to 2024, with only two in 2023.
According to Card Ladder’s Player Index, which tracks 70 of Betts’ most important cards, his market has declined nearly 30% over the past two years. Card Ladder’s overall Baseball Index has fallen over 20% during that same time. Betts’ index has remained about flat over the past year, according to Card Ladder data.
