In an unlikely pairing, Nintendo and Tommy Hilfiger partnered to launch a special edition Game Boy Color in 1999.
The promotion discounted the Game Boy to $57.50 as long as consumers purchased a minimum of $50 worth of Tommy Hilfiger items. Utilizing the pre-existing “Dandelion Yellow” model with the Hilfiger logo slapped on top, it’s believed between 5,000 and 10,000 consoles were produced and sold in department stores.
Years later, as demand for limited-edition console variants has risen drastically, these oddball consoles have become collectible items. This past March, Heritage sold one of the special-edition consoles, sealed and graded VGA 70, for $1,020.
While the consoles themselves are rare, the tabletop kiosks are even rarer. With between 100 and 500 believed to exist, consolevariations, a website dedicated to ranking the rarity of limited-edition video game consoles, assigned it a rarity score of 87 — tied for the rarest Game Boy Color kiosk.
Heritage has sold another one of these kiosks before, previously offering a brand new example, accompanied by its box, in August 2022. It sold for $5,760.
The current kiosk is noted to exhibit scuffing on its screen and is untested, set to sell in the auction house’s Video Games Signature Auction on August 23-24.
