“Alien: Romulus” will receive a limited-edition VHS release this December, director Fede Alvarez announced this week at a Beyond Fest screening in Los Angeles.
The announcement marks the first major studio VHS release since 2006.
The film, which hit theaters in August and grossed $350 million at the box office, is the latest installment of the “Alien” franchise.
The limited-edition release, according to 20th Century Studios, was “an ultimate movie collector’s dream,” noting the tape was created in “celebration of the 45th anniversary of the legendary ‘Alien’ franchise,” according to IGN.
Though the studio has not released details regarding how many tapes will be released, the VHS will exhibit a classic 4x3 aspect ratio.
The art for the release was completed by Matt Ferguson, a renowned movie poster designer known for his work on “The Phantom Menace” 25th Anniversary and “Mad Max Fury Road.”
The release is clearly geared to meet demand of collectors who have shown an increased appetite for physical media in recent years, with sales of VHS listings increasing more than 40% on eBay in 2023 compared to 2022.
