Arguably the greatest upset in sports history will celebrate its 45th anniversary Saturday.

On Feb. 22, 1980, the United States men's hockey team stunned the mighty Soviet Union 4-3 in the Winter Olympic semifinals in Lake Placid, N.Y., a moment forever immortalized as the "Miracle on Ice."

With the Four Nations finals bringing international hockey to the forefront of culture again this week, cllct counts down 10 of the top items from the "Miracle on Ice" to ever sell at public auction.

1. Lake Placid "Miracle On Ice" hockey rink

The actual hockey rink boards from the 1980 Winter Olympics sold for $8,784.60 in 2016. Included in the lot were the boards, glass, benches and penalty box.

The rink was used for a few years after the Olympics and then stored in a facility in Minnesota for two decades before being sold at auction.

2. Jim Craig’s goalie mask, stick, pads, blocker and skates

Goalie Jim Craig sold multiple pieces of his equipment worn throughout the Olympics in 2016, including his mask ($137,849), stick ($60,654), leg pads ($23,033), blocker ($23,033) and skates ($17,569).

3. Mike Eruzione game-worn Olympic jersey

Dubbed “the key artifact of the greatest underdog story ever told,” team captain Mike Eruzione’s jersey sold in 2013 for $657,250 at Heritage Auctions.

If sold today, the jersey would undoubtedly be a multi-million dollar piece.

4. Eruzione's game-used stick from winning goal

Eruzione’s stick, which scored the winning goal against the Soviets, sold for $262,900 in 2013.

Heritage wrote at the time, ”If the Miracle on Ice was the greatest David and Goliath tale in American sports, then this is the sling that launched the fatal blow.”

5. Center Steve Christoff's 1980 Olympic gold medal

Center Steve Christoff’s gold medal sold for $375,961 in 2023. That was the third time the medal had sold, previously fetching $319,800 in 2020 and failing to meet its reserve price of $250,000 in 2017.

Eruzione’s medal went up for auction in 2016, with an estimate of $1 million to $1.5 million, but failed to meet its reserve price despite attracting bids of more than $600,000.

6. 1980 "Miracle on Ice" Sports Illustrated Magazine, graded CGC 9.8

A copy of the 1980 Sports Illustrated "Miracle on Ice" magazine — one of two graded CGC 9.8 with none higher — sold for $19,800 in 2024.

7. Herb Brooks sweatsuit, whistle and stopwatch

Coach Herb Brooks’ sweatsuit, whistle and stopwatch, partially matched to a March 1980 issue of People Magazine, sold for $33,460 in 2015.

8. Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympics torch

A 1980 Lake Placid Olympic torch, one of just 140 made for the game, sold for more than $40,000 in 2018.

9. 1980 American Flag from "Miracle on Ice" handshake photograph

The flag waved by a fan in the famous photograph of the Miracle on Ice handshake sold for $30,000 in 2022.

It was consigned by the fan who collected the flag and appeared in the photo, who kept it for over 40 years.

10. 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics "Miracle on Ice" ticket stub

One of the ticket stubs from the greatest moment in U.S. hockey history, graded PSA 1.5, sold for $3,000 in 2023.
