In many families, dogs are the stars of the show. It's no different for Shohei Ohtani.
On Wednesday night, the Dodgers will give away 40,000 Ohtani bobbleheads featuring the two-way superstar and his dog, "Decoy," a Dutch Kooikerhondje.
Tickets for the game against the Orioles were still being sold Wednesday morning, with a get-in price of $128.
The Dodgers scheduled four Ohtani giveaways this season: two bobblehead nights, a T-shirt night and a hat night. The first bobblehead giveaway May 16 left many fans unhappy as the line stretched well outside the stadium more than two hours in advance of first pitch.
The giveaway of 40,000 bobbleheads attracted a sellout crowd of 53,527 — the largest at Dodger Stadium in five seasons and the largest MLB crowd this year.
Why don't the Dodgers give away a bobblehead for every fan who purchases a ticket? Cost.
Dodgers president Stan Kasten told the Los Angeles Times that corporate sponsors for giveaways likely don't have the budget for $53,000 items.
“We try to make all our fans happy," Kasten told the newspaper. "Most fans, when there is a limit and they come late, I think they understand.”
Some lucky fans will receive a gold Ohtani and Decoy bobblehead. It is unknown how many gold bobbleheads will be handed out, but the Dodgers pulled a similar surprise in the first bobblehead giveaway, where 38,300 bobbleheads were in a white jersey, while 1,700 were in a gray jersey.
Gray jersey bobbleheads can be seen on eBay, listed for more than $1,000, while those in the white jersey can be found for more than $200.
There have already been Ohtani and Decoy bobbleheads listed on eBay as well, with those listed for more than $200 as well.
