From collecting his own cards to wearing them while playing in an actual major-league game, Bobby Witt Jr.’s love of collecting is clear.
But if there was any doubt, the Kansas City Royals star used custom baseball cards as groomsmen invitations for his wedding, revealed in a video posted to the PSA Instagram on Wednesday.
The video shows Witt’s teammate MJ Melendez showing off the invitation, slabbed by PSA and graded a 10.
After inputting the certification number of the card into PSA’s website, it appears the card is one of two at the grade, though full population information does not appear to be available.
The card’s back reads: “I couldn’t think of a better way to send groomsman invitations than by using custom baseball cards. It would be an honor for you to be by my side on my wedding day. It wouldn’t feel right without you there. Consider this the official invite! — B Witter”
This isn't the first baseball card wedding invitation. In 2008, Billy Ripken told our Darren Rovell that he used his famous obscenity card as groomsman gifts. “Fleer sent me some of the cards out of the goodness of their heart,” Ripken told Rovell. “I autographed them and used them for my gifts to my groomsman in my wedding (which took place that offseason). I figured, at the time, it was better than giving them a set of cufflinks. I think I devalued the cards by signing them though.”
Witt has been a common sight for collectors in recent years, often appearing in social-media videos talking about cards and more recently, teaming up with PSA to debut a new concept of “game-worn” cards, which had him and Corbin Carrol wear cards in their uniforms during a game and grade them afterward with a special designation.
