A Mickey Mouse trading card sold for $500,000 on Wednesday, setting an all-time record for any Disney card sold publicly.
Released as part of the 2023 Topps Chrome Disney 100 set in January, the Mickey Mouse Superfractor 1/1 PSA 9 was purchased through Alt’s fixed price marketplace.
The previous record for any Disney card was the $40,383 paid for a 1931 W.D & H.O. Wills Cinema Stars 3rd Series Walt Disney/Mickey Mouse PSA 9 at Goldin in October 2023.
Considered Mickey Mouse’s rookie card, there are just 800 total examples of that card graded across the four major services, according to third-party grading tracker GemRate. Of the 624 graded by PSA, just four have achieved a grade of 9, with none higher.
A number of other graded examples of the 2023 Topps Chrome Disney 100 Mickey Mouse have sold throughout 2024, with a Gold Wave Refractor /50 PSA 10 holding the previous high sale at $14,100.
Dozens of Disney-related trading card sets have been released over the years, though ultra-modern sets, such as Topps Chrome and Kakawow Phantom, have been the most popular among collectors in recent years.
According to GemRate, Mickey Mouse’s seven most popular graded cards have all come from sets released in 2023, with the 1957 Barratt & Co. Ltd Walt Disney Characters 2nd Series the lone vintage card in Mickey’s top-10 most graded.
Interest in Disney-related cards has also surged alongside the release of the Disney Lorcana trading card game. According to Card Ladder, the highest sale for a Disney-related card in 2024 came from Lorcana, with an Enchanted Discard PSA 10 fetching $40,000 on eBay in July.
