There was no shortage of headlining card sales this past month, from the release of new products with chases like Victor Wembanyama in 2023-24 Topps Chrome Basketball, to a bounty war and the largest sports auction in history.
Here are the top 10 sports card sales from August 2024, according to data from Card Ladder:
Thanks to its record-shattering auction last week, Heritage claims six of the 10 cards on this list, including two of the top three. Goldin landed on the list twice, with the remaining spots belonging to Robert Edward Auction and Alt.
Only two athletes appeared on the list more than once: Kobe Bryant and Mickey Mantle. Unsurprisingly, both Mantle sales feature the 1952 Topps. The most common era represented was post-war, with five cards on the list, followed by modern with three and pre-war with two.
Just two sports were represented: Baseball and basketball, with the former taking seven of the ten spots.
All but two of the cards were graded by PSA.
The average price came out to $674,971, with just two cards clearing $1 million during the month. That brings 2024’s total of million-dollar card sales to five, which is basically on track to match last year’s total of 11. That pace is still a long way off 2021 and 2022, which saw 43 and 39 seven-figure sales, respectively.
Four of the cards on the list, including the No. 1 Bryant card, which was totally unknown to the hobby for nearly 20 years, sold for the first time this month. Others, like the T206 Ty Cobb, sold for the first time in its grade of PSA 9 since 2004.
Of the six cards with public comps, half were up in value. Though the LeBron James RPA, which sold at Alt for $562,135, took a steep dropoff after it last sold for over $900,000 over a year ago.
